Putin offers to create digital center on Russky Island in Far East

VLADIVOSTOK, Sep 12 (PRIME) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the country’s Far Eastern Russky Island, in several kilometers off the city of Vladivostok, should host a center of digital development.

“Within our program of the digital economy I suggest establishing on Russky Island a digital development center on such directions as design of software, technologies to store and transfer so-called big data, cybersecurity,” Putin said at the Eastern Economic Forum, which is taking place in Vladivostok on Tuesday–Thursday.

Two months ago, a unique innovation course of digital technologies learning took place for the first time on the basis of the Far Eastern Federal University under the national technology initiative, he said.

“The whole process from gathering an audience to elaboration of individual educational trajectories was built with the use of artificial intelligence technologies. Today, taking into account the gained experience, the Far Eastern Federal University offers a permanent program of training specialists, managers in the digital economy sphere. We’ll expand this practice to other regions and universities of our county,” he said.

Putin also ordered the government to work on granting Russky Island a special status to make it possible to test there cutting-edge technologies that are not regulated by the law yet.

“Today new technologies are often ahead of the well-settled rules of the law and certification. We want to lift these barriers, create for the Far East a kind of a space of the future, a space of dream, if I may put is so, of creativity,” he said.

“It should be such an environment where any research team, a group of enthusiasts could get all the conditions to launch startups, implement their ideas and innovation projects, test advanced developments, whose practical use has not been worded into the law yet, including in the field of robotechnics, driverless and maritime transport, medicine, biotechnologies, and ecology.”
